Hand and Hearth Broom Crafting at Cordwood Studios
May 22 @ 10:00 am – 5:00 pm
In this two-day course you will learn how to craft your own hand and hearth brooms, from four inches in length, to four feet. At the end of the course, you will walk away with 10 fully functional handmade brooms.
You will make four kitchen tools (cake tester, pot scrubber, root vegetable scrubber and counter whisk), a triple whisk, a turkey wing whisk, a round whisk with woven handle, a hawks tail whisk, a short cobweb broom, and a flat (stitched) broom on a broomstick.
By the end of this course, you will leave with knowledge on how to make these brooms as well as an understanding of simple broom magic. You will have learned some of the history behind the designs and the uses of these versatile tools. You will also have the opportunity to imbue your brooms with your own intentions, purposes, charms and amulets.
Note: This will be a physical weekend, best suited for adults 18+ or, if younger, chaperoned by an adult. You should be able to work from a seated position for more than an hour at a time, and be comfortable using your upper body, core abdominal muscles, arms, hands and wrists to perform repetitive tasks while winding and weaving parts of the brooms.
